The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.
This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also requested that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
He was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, many his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.
The police took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
