British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - also known as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.
UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."
During December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The United Nations reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
