European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
