Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
