Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
