Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to challenge specific decisions made by the official, following the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
